The Good Wife, "The Deconstruction" (Season 6, Ep.20) (04/26/15): Named partner elected to public office (MR 7.5)

Contributed by Maryam Shafizadeh

Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) had been a named partner at Florrick, Agos, & Lockhart (Julianna Margulies, Matt Czuchry, & Christine Baranski). However, when she decided to run for State's Attorney (she was elected but never served), her firm was required to remove her name from the practice and from any communications to comply with MR 7.5.  David Lee (Zach Grenier) was added as a partner and "Florrick, Agos, and Lockhart" was changed to "Lockhart, Agos, & Lee."

MR 7.5(c) prohibits a law firm from using the name of an attorney holding a public office during the period which the attorney is not actively practicing with the firm.

The show takes place in Illinois, which has adopted the Model Rule relevant here.

  1. Excellent episode of one of my favorite shows! The former law firm, Lockhart & Gardner was known for taking dangerous risk and bending the law. Diane Lockhart has clearly learned from her past mistakes in this episode. Also, it was so important for Alicia Florrick to not be a named partner while she was running for States Attorney because Lockhart, Agos & Lee has a history of violating ethics along with the States Attorney's office. If this show was real, most of the attorneys would be in a lot of trouble.
